Monday Funday

Hi bloggers, today's post is about our last wheels day of 2017, in other words my last wheels day at Waikowhai Primary School. There were 3 parts to the day. Games, wheels and going to the pool and slip n' slide. On the day there were also some leftover things that weren't sold at Gala as well that you could buy. The day was really fun. My favourite part was going down the slip n' slide but not the part when I got a splinter in my foot. When it was time to the games me and my friends learnt how to play a new game called Draughts. The game was so much fun to play and took a long time to finish playing. Something that could improve would probably be making the slip n' slide more slippery. I would also change the colour of my dark coloured clothes because they made me quite hot. 🌞 Overall the day was totally awesome. Here are some cool photos of the day.

Inquiry Design Challenge

Hi blogging world, this blog post is about one of my favourite things that we did this year. Mine is the Inquiry design challenge. For this challenge we had to get in groups of three and my teacher gave us a materials which were 3 pieces of newspaper, 4 paperclips, 1 metre of string and some tape. We were then asked to create something that was equivalent to what the teacher said. for example a handbag, umbrella etc and we only had 15 minutes to make it. Here are some photos of the activity.

The challenge was super fun and was quite intense. My favourite part was when we had to introduce our product and say why people should buy it. A negative thing that happened was that sometimes your item would just break when it's the last minute or when you are introducing it. At times I thought my team was doing a great job at making it sturdy but sometimes I thought our item wouldn't be strong enough and break in the middle of us talking. It was really hard trying not to waste the supplies we had but, at the end everything needed a lot so we ended up with no material left. I would definitely want to do this challenge again because it is so much fun.

Gala Day Thinking Hats

Hi bloggers I'm Joyce and today my post is going to be about my Thinking Hats about the Gala day that my school hosted. The Gala was so much fun! For the activity we had to write something about the Gala related to the six thinking hats. On each slide is a different thinking hat and we had to think about what we were going to write. Have a look at my work.

This activity was quite fun to do because I got to recap about the Gala day because I kind of forgot what happened. The best part about the Gala was shopping and throwing wet sponges at teachers. It was so funny when they got soaked. Another fun thing was when we made advertisements for the Gala. We got to decorate things which was a ton of fun. A negative thing that happened was that after you did all the shopping you needed there wasn't much more to see. Overall I thought the Gala was so fun and a huge success. At the end we raised $13,400 and that will go towards building the new junior adventure playground. I think next time I will add some more photos as there was a lot.

Please leave some feedback so I can improve.

Tote Bag Reflection

Hello bloggers, today's post is a reflection of the bag making process for the gala. We are having a Gala so we can raise money for our junior playground.
For the Gala my class is making tote bags to reduce the use of plastic bags. Plastic bags are taking over the world by the minute so we thought that making tote bags would be sustainable, useful and long-lasting. For this task we learnt how to sew with a sewing machine, screenprint and make a bag.
The steps of making a bag is: (Wait! make sure you have adult supervision and try to make your lines as straight as possible.)
1. Cut 2 pieces of fabric the same size. This will be the body of the bag. If you want to decorate your bag this is the time.

2. Put the 2 fabrics on top of each other inside facing out.

3. Sew a straight line across 3 sides of the bag, leaving one open for putting thing in. Make sure you are sewing quite close to the edge but leaving space for zig-zagging. Make sure every time you sew go back and forth and the start and end of the your sewing.

4. On the outside of the straight lines turn your sewing machine into zig-zag mode. Zig-zag the same 3 sides. This will stop any freying and make it extra strong.

5. At the top of the bag where it is open fold down about 1 cm and iron it down. Sew that near the edge of the fold. Fold the bag down again about 2cm and iron that down. Sew that near the edge of the fold aswell.

6. Turn the bag outside facing in now. Make sure that your corners and all poked out.

7. Iron the whole bag. Sides, edges, everything. (but make sure that you don't burn yourself because it will hurt a lot.)

8. Cut 2 strips of fabric or strapping that are 70cm long and 8cm wide.

9. Sew the straps on going back and forth 3 times on each side forming a square. Make sure that your handles are as far down as you can where the hem is.

Once your handles are sewn on you are done with your bag. Yay! You will now be an expert at making tote bags.
The best part of the whole bag making process is designing/decorating your bag. That was so much fun. something bad was that some of the screenprints bled into the fabric where we didn't want it to be. A challenging thing making all my lines straight and sewing on the handles. Those were really hard for me.I think that this activity changed my thinking about the environment and how we are damaging it by using plastic bags. I hope you guys can also reduce the use of plastic bags in your household aswell. I think that tote bags are going to help the world's problem of plastic bags.
Here are some photos.

Our classroom was a mess after                                                                   a day of sewing.

Gala Day Advertisement

Hello bloggers, today's post is going to be about my Gala Day poster. This year we are holding a Gala and we would like it to be very successful. For inquiry we were asked to make a poster that would advertise for the school Gala. At the Gala we will be selling sustainable products like totebags, soaps, pot plants, candle holders, homemade paper and any more! All the information will be in the poster. I hope you can come!Have a look at my poster that I made on Google drawing.

I thought that this activity was very fun to do. My favourite part was when we could decorate the poster. I liked adding the colours and images. The hardest part of this activity was making all the information fit on one page because there is so much information to write about the Gala.

Travelling around NZ on a budget

Hi bloggers, it's Joyce again. Today's blog post is going to be about Travelling around NZ with a budget. In maths we had to complete a slideshow of us travelling around NZ. We had to travel around NZ for 11 days with a daily budget of $500. Here is an example of what we had to do.

This is a  task board of what you have to complete.

We had to go to the Air New Zealand and Jetstar websites to find out the price of tickets and decide which to fly with. I chose Jetstar

We also had to select a car to travel with, during our stay at our destination.
We then had to choose an accommodation to stay for the night. I chose the one in the bottom right corner.

While in Dunedin we also had to choose two activities to do. I chose Cadbury World and Taieri George Teain.
Finally we had to add up all of our expenses and mine was under budget. Yay!
This activity was quite easy for me since I do travel quite a bit and I sometimes help my parents plan the trip.
One thing that was quite hard for me during this day's activity was choosing what car to rent.
Overall I thought this activity was very fun to do and sometimes a bit challenging.

Folk Lore Poem

Hi Bloggers, today's blog post is going to be about my poem that I wrote this term about mountains and camping. We had to make a couplet poem which is when every last word of two lines rhyme together. We did this because we were about to go to camp at Mt Ruapehu. If you can't really see the words on the picture the words are below:

Folk Lore

The pale white snow
Has a shimmery white glow

Mountains reach up so high
Towards the bright blue sky

The still peaceful quietness
Gives my heart this wildness

That made my heart want to soar
Forever like a princess in a folk lore

There were some difficulties during the process of making this poem. We didn't have a lot of time to make it and we had to colour it, write it, and publish it. It was kind of hard to make the sunset blend since we only had colouring pencils. But at the end everything was fine. The positives of this activity was that I concentrated more because we had so little time to do it.  Another good thing about the activity is that I learnt how to blend with colouring pencils. Overall I thought that this poem was very fun to make.
